The Dean of the School of Arts and Sciencesprovides oversight of existing academic programs and thedevelopment of new programs to meet the ever-changing needs of aglobal society. The Dean is expected to be a leader in theirdiscipline and in the broader community. As a member of theProvost’s leadership team, the Dean serves as the chief academicand administrative officer for the School of Arts and Sciences. Inthis role the Dean is responsible for leadership and oversight ofthe School’s academic and research enterprise as well as leadingthe administration, development, and direction of academicprograms, strategic planning, and fundraising.Essential Functions: Cultivating local, national, and global relationships andsources of support and working closely with the Office ofAdvancement to secure major gifts and to promote the image of theSchool and its programs.Fostering a highly collaborative and inclusive environment, onethat values and leverages the benefits of diverse perspectives, toattract, recruit, and retain top faculty, staff, and students.Creating and implementing a student-centered vision andstrategy that includes measurable outcomes for student success,through a process that engenders trust and includes faculty, staff,student, alumni, and industryLeading faculty and staff to develop existing and nurture newacademic and research programs that yield exceptionaloutcomes.Developing and implementing a recruitment and marketing planthat shows evidence of faculty and staff involvement, measurableannual goals for new students and for retention of students, andpromoting collaboration with industry to develop and strengthen theprogram curricula to meet market needs.Creating professional development opportunities for faculty andstaff to upgrade their expertise in the implementation ofinnovative pedagogy and andragogy, the use of technology, and thedevelopment of scholarship/creative expression within theirdiscipline.Providing for structured, faculty-led curriculum reviews andupdates that reflect standards and changes in the discipline;ensuring assessment plans are in place including production ofannual reports on both internal student learning outcomes andprogram outcomes; and ensuring continued certification and theestablishment and maintenance of accreditation of degreeprograms.Strengthening relationships with alumni and other strategicexternal partners to support the School’s research, scholarly,educational, service, and fundraising goals; identifying andpartnering with leading organizations to promote growth for thefield and employment opportunities for students.Collaborating effectively with appropriate industries and otherconstituents in the region and throughout the state of Florida andrepresenting FMU and the School of Arts and Sciences with externalcommunities.Prioritizing expenditures and effectively managing resources ina manner that demonstrates accountability and support for theSchool’s mission.Managing academic processes within the unit including thereview and approval of student transfer transcripts, graduationapplication and clearance processes, drop-and-add, etc.Providing accurate, timely responses to requested informationand ongoing implementation of strategies to ensure compliance withrules and regulations.Recommending renewal of faculty contracts, compensation,promotion, tenure, honors and awards, non-renewal or dismissal incollaboration with the Department Chairs.Establishing a culture of assessment and continuous improvementin the School, leading to innovations in pedagogy and creativeopportunities to challenge and nurture students in the pursuit ofacademic excellence.The omission of specific duties does not preclude thesupervisor from assigning duties that logically relates to theposition. This position requires a doctorate in a field represented inthe School of Arts and Sciences with an accumulation ofscholarship, service, and teaching commiserate with the rank offull professor; an established record of teaching, research,external funding, and scholarship in the discipline.Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.Pre-Employment screening is required: criminal background-checkand drug testing.
