first_imgFRISCO, Texas – Incarnate Word’s Deion Hardy and Houston Baptist’s Denim Rogers are the Southland Conference Men’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. All Southland Athletes of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank.Hardy competed for the Cardinals in a pair of events at the Houston Invite, including a school and conference record setting relay performance. Rogers also competed at the Houston Invite for HBU helping the Huskies with a second-place finish in the Heptathlon, breaking a school record of his own.Men’s Track Athlete of the Week – Deion Hardy, Incarnate Word– Sr. – Temple, TexasHardy spearheaded a UIW men’s Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team that put up a Southland Conference and program record 9:59:01 time. The performance marked the fastest time in the conference by more than 22 seconds, and the 20th fastest DMR time in the nation for the 2019 season. The senior then followed up with a second-place finish in the 800-meter the next day, putting up the second fastest time in the conference this year and fastest performance of the week by a Southland member.Honorable Mention: Micah Larkins, Northwestern State; Tyler Smith, McNeese; Jamal January, Abilene Christian; Jordan Rowe, Lamar.Men’s Field Athlete of the Week – Denim Rogers, Houston Baptist – Jr. – San Antonio, TexasRogers broke the HBU record in his first heptathlon as a Husky. His point total of 5,332 is stands first in the conference and ranks him 10th nationally for the 2019 season. The junior tied for first in the high jump (2.03m/6-8), finished second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.21) and third in the 60-meter dash (7.03). His high jump mark from the Houston Invitational ranks second in the Southland Conference for 2019.Honorable Mention: Kai Schmidt, Abilene Christian; Clinton Cole, Incarnate Word; Timon Dresselhaus, Central Arkansas.Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director.
