WHITTIER – A big-rig and a vehicle collided Thursday morning on the southbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway near the Peck Road exit, causing a brief lane closure, authorities said. No serious injuries were reported. The accident occurred just before 10 a.m. Schurr to host magic show MONTEBELLO – A magic show fundraiser to benefit academic programs at four elementary schools takes place at 7:30 tonight and Saturday at Schurr High School auditorium, 820 N. Wilcox Ave. The fundraiser was organized by IMPACT, a student community service club at Schurr. Magician John Gabriel will perform. Proceeds will go to Schurr’s four feeder elementary schools. Military hallway gets a face-lift WHITTIER – The Whittier Historical Society Museum, 6755 Newlin Ave., will hold a pre-Memorial Day unveiling of the museum’s newly renovated and updated military hallway at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The name of Whittier soldier Brian Hughes, who was killed in 1967 in Vietnam, was recently added to the wall. Hughes had been corresponding with students at St. Mary’s Elementary School while he was in Vietnam. The day he was killed was the day the students received Hughes’s last letter. Relay for Life set for Saturday LA MIRADA – The fourth annual Relay for Life, 24-hour walk-a-thon to raise money for the American Cancer Society, will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Benton Middle School, 15709 E. Olive Branch Lane. Numerous teams have paid $15 and will walk around the Benton track from 9 a.m. Saturday to 9 p.m. Sunday. At 9 p.m., luminaries will be placed around the field. Each candle-lighted bag will have a memorial message. The La Mirada Kiwanis Club will hold a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. Sunday. Closing ceremonies will be held at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
