first_imgLetterkenny 247 Triathlon club notes Race Reports : Ironman WalesClub members were racing all over Europe and Ireland as race season draws to a close.Nicholas Fowell and Sean Mc Fadden made the trip across the Irish Sea to Tenby In Wales for the Ironman Wales race on Sunday. Despite being behind Nick in the swim Sean was first man home in a time of 10.39.09. Nick was close behind in a time of 10.54.54. Both times represented excellent performances from the duo.The previous day Bronagh Ogara and Mairead Cullen competed in the 70.3 race in Groomsfort Co. Down with Bronagh fourth woman overall and Mairead seventh woman home on a difficult run course.Liam Tinney made the relatively short trip to the Glens of Antrim for the hilly sprint race held there on Saturday.John Conaghan continues to excel , winning his age category in the national Sprint Championship held in Clogherhead Co.Louth. John is now the National Series champion in his age group. John competed in the Race in March finishing 17th , Challenge Galway Ironman in June winning his category, the National 70.3 race in Kenmare winning his category and winning his category in three other National Series events . He narrowly missed out on the National championship puncturing on the last three lapsGavin Crawford representing the defence forces was part of the national 70.3 team who finished third overall in the race held in Luxembourg. He was 8th overall and 2nd Irishman home . The swim was cancelled so the race was five k run 90k cycle and 21k run. The cycle involved a lot of climbing and was particularly difficult.The irish defence forces were just behind Belgium and Germany .Siobhan Gallagher was first Woman in the Gartan adventure race held on Saturday . Open water swimKaren Crawford competed recently in the Glendalough national park swim in a splendid time of 1.08 for the 3.9k swim. She won her category and has performed very strongly in all the open water swim events throughout 2016. She , John Cannon, Colin Dean and Mark Mc Collum rounded off the swim season .with the first Glencar lake swim in Sligo. Karen was third overall and first woman in the two k swim in a time of 34.43. Mark was able to compete in the race as his knee surgery was postponed.We all wish him well in his recovery after surgery.Road Race reportsIn the Ten K road race held in Milford Danny Mooney was second and Ita McGettigan was first club woman home and also won her category. There was also impressive performances from Pat Brady, Catherine Mc Kinlay and Martina Mc Daid.Other newsPrior to the formation of letterkenny 247 there another Triathlon club in existence in Letterkenny in the 1980s called Errigal Triathlon club. We have some common members in Kevin Hennessy, John Cannon and Karen Crawford. The Irish middle distance championship was held in Sligo and the 1985 event was won by Gerard Hartman the noted physical therapist in a time of just under four hours . John Cannon had a time of4.50.39, Kevin Hennessy 5.03.53 and Lac member Gerry Davenport 5.11.50 . Thirty years later John Cannon had a time of 5.19.30 in Athlone in the middle distance championship in 2015. Form is temporary but class is permanent.2016 membership is now closed. 2017 membership is available from the first of October.Prospective new members may join us for three sessions and after that for insurance purposes they have to join if they wish to continue. Joining details are on the club notice board in Aura.The quarterly swim fee is due for October to December . Please pay Emma before the end of this month. We may have to restrict access going forward due to numbers so paying in advance guarantees access to the swim session.The Club Agm will be held in October and more details will follow shortly.Open water safetyThere will not be any more Monday night swim sessions this yearIf anyone wants to use Gartan lake please enter from the heritage centre entrance point and please make sure you have a swim partner and swim buoy for personal safety. There is a club shed for changing and the lock code is available from any committee member.
