Windward Road, John Mills set for another gigantic battle

first_imgAfter breaking John Mills All-Age and Junior High’s 19-year winning streak at the championship in 2014, Windward Road All-Age and Junior High have set their sights on a third successive hold on the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) Junior High Athletics Championships title when the 38th renewal begins at the National Stadium this morning at 9 a.m.Nearly 30 schools will be participating, with the champions set to earn $500,000 worth of running spikes courtesy of hosts INSPORTS. Clarendon’s Osborne Store are the lone entrants from outside Kingston and St Catherine. The Oral Whilby-coached Windward Road defeated John Mills by 92 points to end the Ransford Spaulding-coached team’s dominance in 2014. Then in 2015, they amassed 520.5 to claim the championship by 70 points over their archrivals.Although not overly confident, Windward Road’s head coach, Whilby, expects his team to make it a three-peat.”We can make it three in a row. We have the team to do so and we are very mindful of the job at hand and are ready to defend this title,” he said.”This team is not as strong as last year, and we are not looking for that margin of victory (70 points) this time. If we do it by a single point, I will be happy, but it will be a keenly contested championshipsSpaulding expects his team to put up a strong challenge, but is not making any predictions.”My team is always ready, whether or not we have a good team. I am not a person to call results, but I can tell you we are going to give a good account of ourselves. Our deficiency was in the junior (primary) area (last year), and I believe we have made strides in that area and we have some top athletes in the senior section. so we are coming to do our best and to perform. I can’t say we are going to win, but our objective is to win,” he added.last_img read more

Why Arsenal are the real Premier League title bottlers

first_img 5 5 Arsenal players look dejected As well as this, Wenger’s side are the only team to have done the double over Leicester City this season – here is a selection of reaction from fans following the latter of those victories on Valentine’s Day. 5 5 Now, though, after some pretty mixed results, Arsenal have dropped all the way down into fourth spot – 12 points behind a relentless Foxes side and five behind Spurs. As Tottenham drew 1-1 with West Brom on Monday night to go seven points behind leaders Leicester City, the north London side were almost inevitably labelled ‘bottlers’ by rival fans.On Twitter many laughed at the Lilywhites reverting to their ‘Spursy’ type as they failed to find a way to beat the Baggies at White Hart Lane after Craig Dawson cancelled out his earlier own goal. The way some Arsenal and Chelsea supporters reacted you’d have thought Mauricio Pochettino’s side had let a lead at the Premier League’s summit slip.In fact, Spurs haven’t been top of the pile all season. The last team to be seated above the Foxes over their fairytale campaign was actually Arsenal. The Gunners, coming out of the hectic festive period, were in first place from December 28 until January 24 when Chelsea beat them 1-0 at the Emirates. At their highest point this campaign, on January 3, Wenger’s men were two points ahead of Leicester City, three in front of Manchester City, and six ahead of rivals Tottenham. But, straight after putting themselves back into the race, within two points of Claudio Ranieri’s side, they immediately lost two on the spin – to Manchester United and Swansea City, conceding five goals and scoring three. So the Arsenal fans who laughed at Tottenham should probably be taking a look at their own side and ask why it is Spurs and not the Gunners who are left as Leicester’s only rivals for the title. 5last_img read more
