‘I really wanted to put on a show’ – Rodman laps field to highlight Kingston Criterium

first_imgKINGSTON: There was a riveting end to the Jamaica Cycling Federation’s Kingston Criterium on Sunday at the Kingston waterfront as national and regional champion Marloe Rodman dominated a strong field to win the feature event and finish as the top rider. Visiting Michel Smith from the Cayman Islands and Cleveland Sharpe of Fresh Vibez Cycling Club were second and third, respectively. In the 15-lap feature race, Rodman – who jumped out to an early lead – delivered something special. Approaching lap 12, the 2014 Commonwealth Games athlete had already lapped five cyclists and by the time they finished, he did what several spectators thought impossible – lapping the entire field of riders. “I was pushing all the way as I really wanted to put on a show for all those who came out to support the event,” said Rodman. “I could hear them cheering me on to go after the pack of riders and it helped to motivate me to keep going and finish the race strong. “… I think it was a great thing for cycling in Jamaica. We need more events like this to showcase and find new talent,” added Rodman. “This was an important race for me also as it is crucial to my preparation ahead of joining the Bike Haus team in the UK, as well as the upcoming Cycling World Championship, for which I have qualified.” Rodman also finished the day as the Category One champion ahead of the Clarendon Cycling Club pair of Oneil Sinclair and Dean Martin, in second and third, respectively. Team Breakaway Cycling’s Dean Robertson topped Category Two, with Robert Barnes in second and Mario Brooks, also of Team Breakaway, third. In Category Three, Fitzroy Walters took the top spot ahead of Jermar Brissett of Breakaway Cycling and Barrington Bailey of Clarendon Cycling. FORREST CLAIMS Category Four was won by Jerome Forrest of Clarendon Cycling, with Endurance Cycling’s Recardo Blackwood second and Daniel Palmer of Team Blissett third. Roger Allen took Category Five ahead of Ishmael White and Tevan Richards, in second and third, respectively, while in the Juniors category, Andrew Ramsay was the top performer, with Aduella Ottey second and Ashani Beckford third. The Juvenile category was won by Tadre Watt, with Sheldon Virgo and Jesse McClure second and third, respectively. The female race was won by Judy Chin, who finished just ahead of Deonne Caines, with Sanesha James taking third. The Masters event saw Richard Smith winning ahead of Raydeem Lawson and Cleveland Sharpe, respectively. Donald Davis was the best in the Super Masters category, finishing ahead of Donald Hall and Devon Beckford, respectively. The All Comers ‘Rambo Race’ was won by Anthony Bagalue, with Rayon Whyte second and Omar Dwyer third. Team Breakaway won the award for best team participation, while Clarendon Cycling took the award for best team performance.center_img CATEGORY FOURlast_img read more

Google’s New Trivia Game Tests Your Knowledge & Your Search Skills

first_imgRelated Posts So that thousands of people trying to find that answer and tweeting about it don’t skew real-time search results, the game will be run via “Deja Google,” “a wormhole inspired time machine that enables you to solve today’s puzzle spoiler free by searching the Internet as it existed before A Google a Day launched.” In other words, your search will be limited to the days before the question is posted, so you won’t come across a spoiler. You can still “cheat” by opening up another tab to search Google. And certainly no Googling. But the Google a Day puzzle encourages you to do just that, use the search engine to find the answer. According to Google’s “anthropologist of search” Daniel Russell, the company recognizes the importance of play in learning a new skill and with that has created a game “that would engage people in a playful way to learn how to search.” A Google a Day, like many newspaper crossword puzzles, will get progressively more difficult as the week goes one, each one really testing your ability to come up with the right keywords and search query to locate the answer.last_img read more

The Power of Point of View (POV) Shots

first_imgPoint of View (POV) shots have been around since the early days of filmmaking. This “subjective camera” is still commonly used to captivate audiences.A point of view shot, also known as POV shot, is an angle that shows what a character is looking at. Typically POV shots are placed in between a shot of a character looking at something and a shot showing the character’s reaction. Before jumping in depth, check out this great montage of POV shots from Leigh Singer. It’s incredibly difficult to pinpoint to first use of a POV shot in cinema history, but there are certainly instances that became classic. Going back to 1927’s Napoleon, director Abel Gance wanted to film a fight scene from Napoleon’s point of view. To achieve the shot, they wrapped the camera and lens body in sponge padding and had the actors punch the camera. By 1931, a two minute long sequence of POV shots were used in the transformation scenes of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.The 1940s and 50s really propelled the use of POV shots. The era of horror, mystery, and sci-fi films used the technique to captivate and scare audiences. In 1947, the Lady in the Lake used POV shots like never before. The subjective camera, a POV shot term referring to the view of the subject, was used throughout the entire film. The movie’s star, Robert Montgomery, was only ever seen in the reflection of windows and mirrors. To spike attendance, MGM billed the film with the tagline “You and Robert Montgomery solve a murder mystery together!”POV shots became a staple of legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. From Vertigo to The Birds, Hitchcock’s use of the technique was everywhere, but he masterfully crafted an entire film around POV shots with Rear Window. In fact, POV shots were used so often in Rear Window, filmmaker Jeff Desom was able to create an entire timelapse of the film just using the POV shots.POV shots tend to represent what an actor sees. However, POV shots can also be used for inanimate objects. These shots were notoriously used throughout the television series Breaking Bad. We are given the point of view of everything from a stovetop to a dryer. Here’s a wonderful look at Breaking Bad’s POV shots compiled by kogonada. In the 1970s, Steven Spielberg dazzled and terrified audiences with his POV shots in Duel and Jaws. By the 1980s and 90s, these shots were frequently used as a technological first person view from the Terminator, Predator, and RoboCop. Viewers were also introduced to Quentin Tarantino’s trunk shot. Recently POV shots have become synonymous with superheroes. Whether web slinging through New York with Spider-Man or flying inside of Iron Man’s armor. All of which you can see in this incredible compilation from Jacob T. Swinney.Looking for more on classic filmmaking? Check out these posts from PremiumBeat:4 Iconic Editing TechniquesThe Art of Perspective and Symmetry in Cinematography7 Iconic Hollywood Cinematography TechniquesDid we skip your favorite POV shot? England’s Mark Wood set to miss India tour with ankle injury

first_imgEngland bowler Mark Wood will have ankle surgery and is set to miss the tour of India that starts next month, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Sunday. (Latest Cricket stories)The 26-year-old Durham pace bowler will require a third operation on his left ankle within a year after it was discovered that he had fractured a bone during a County Championship match against Surrey last month.”There’s no reason to think that when he’s had this bone fragment removed, he won’t be able to get back to bowling as well as he has in the second half of the summer,” England’s national physiotherapy lead Ben Langley said on the ECB website (www.ecb.co.uk).”His foot and ankle swelled up hugely during the game, which was obviously worrying, and then we were perplexed when nothing significant showed up on the first scan.”It was only when we got him in for a second scan that we discovered he’d been playing on despite having fractured a bone,” Langley added.Wood had previously been ruled out of England’s ongoing tour of Bangladesh.England will travel to India to play five Tests, three ODIs and the same number of Twenty20 internationals between November 9 and February 1.last_img read more
