Windward Road, John Mills set for another gigantic battle

first_imgAfter breaking John Mills All-Age and Junior High’s 19-year winning streak at the championship in 2014, Windward Road All-Age and Junior High have set their sights on a third successive hold on the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) Junior High Athletics Championships title when the 38th renewal begins at the National Stadium this morning at 9 a.m.Nearly 30 schools will be participating, with the champions set to earn $500,000 worth of running spikes courtesy of hosts INSPORTS. Clarendon’s Osborne Store are the lone entrants from outside Kingston and St Catherine. The Oral Whilby-coached Windward Road defeated John Mills by 92 points to end the Ransford Spaulding-coached team’s dominance in 2014. Then in 2015, they amassed 520.5 to claim the championship by 70 points over their archrivals.Although not overly confident, Windward Road’s head coach, Whilby, expects his team to make it a three-peat.”We can make it three in a row. We have the team to do so and we are very mindful of the job at hand and are ready to defend this title,” he said.”This team is not as strong as last year, and we are not looking for that margin of victory (70 points) this time. If we do it by a single point, I will be happy, but it will be a keenly contested championshipsSpaulding expects his team to put up a strong challenge, but is not making any predictions.”My team is always ready, whether or not we have a good team. I am not a person to call results, but I can tell you we are going to give a good account of ourselves. Our deficiency was in the junior (primary) area (last year), and I believe we have made strides in that area and we have some top athletes in the senior section. so we are coming to do our best and to perform. I can’t say we are going to win, but our objective is to win,” he added.last_img read more
